Oswaldkirk Village Walk 22nd January 2012

The starting point for the Main and Short Walks is 1.8 miles past the Sun Inn on the Bilsdale Road [SE573 962], and takes about 20-25 minutes by car. Parking is available in a layby at this point, immediately before the turn-off to Stable Holme [on the left] and Hill End Farm [on the right].ݬ
The Main Walk will start at 1100 and is reasonably strenuous, just over 5 miles and should take about 2 hours. The initial part of the walk to Hagg House is fairly flat, followed by a short climb to Hill End Farm. At this point the short walk returns down the farm track to the parking [see below]. The main walk climbs up on to Nab Ridge past a large cairn and along the ridge before descending on a rough and dampish track through some old bracken to just above Cam House. From there the route makes its way back to Oak House through some plantation woodland, and down the farm track to the parked cars.
The walk is not suitable for dogs, as the permissive access area on Nab Ridge specifically forbids them.
There are no fords on this route.

The Short Walk will start at 1215 and has only a brief, gentle climb of about 600m in length, up to Hill End Farm; it is the lower ring of the figure of eight that makes up the Main Walk. It is just

over 2 miles and is easy going under foot, with most of it being on gravel or surfaced farm tracks. The off-piste section is smooth, sheep-mown grass.
Dogs would be OK on this part of the walk, although would probably need to be kept on their leads; as with the Main Walk, there are no fords.
Lunch for all will be at The Feathers in Helmsley at 1430. It will cost 10.95 [1 course], 14.95 [2 courses] and 17.95 [3 courses] and will be their Sunday Roast Buffet.
Please let us know [by email, ‘phone, letter, telegram or accosting us in the village] which walk you will be on, and whether or not you will be joining us for lunch.
